What do negative electricity prices mean for you?

Negative electricity prices might sound confusing. Why would someone pay you to use power? But it actually happens – and there’s a clear explanation.

Negative electricity prices might sound confusing. Why would someone pay you to use power? But it actually happens – and there’s a clear explanation.

In Norway, electricity prices follow the Nord Pool power exchange. Sometimes, producers must pay to deliver electricity. This usually occurs when there’s high production but low consumption – like at night, on weekends, or during holidays.

When more electricity is in the grid than people use, prices are pushed down. In extreme cases, the price becomes negative. For you as a customer, this means you are effectively paid to use electricity – at least on the energy part of the bill. You still pay for grid fees and taxes, but the energy itself can cost nothing, and may even reduce your total bill.

Such situations mostly happen in areas with lots of renewable energy, like hydropower or wind. These sources can’t just be turned off easily. Water must be released, and the wind can’t be stopped. So power gets produced even when demand is low.

If you’re a Viddakraft customer with a spot price agreement, this is good news – you benefit directly from market fluctuations. When electricity is cheap, you pay less. When it’s free – or negative – you can save even more.

You won’t necessarily get money into your bank account, but your electricity bill may go down if you use power during the cheapest hours. That’s why it’s smart to follow the hourly prices in the Viddakraft app. You can see when power is cheapest and plan accordingly.

A great tip is to shift usage to those cheaper times – like charging your EV, running the washing machine, or heating water at night. Small changes can make a big difference.

Negative prices aren’t dangerous. They don’t mean something is broken – quite the opposite. They show that Norway’s power system is flexible and in balance. And that you, as a consumer, can influence both the environment and your wallet.

At Viddakraft, we make it easy to understand and track electricity prices. We give you full insight into your costs and help you make smart choices. Negative prices are a great example of why it pays to have a market-based agreement – and the tools to stay in control.
